Antonio “ Tony “ Madruga, was born in Pembroke Pines, Florida on July 2, 1994. He is presently attending New World School of the Arts in Miami.
He is a member of the Monk Combo, Monk All Star Sextet and Jazz Ensemble. He is a past beneficiary of Patrons of Exceptional Artist under the direction of Giselle Brodsky and has studied privately Jazz with William Noll.
He is a 4 time recipient of Downbeat Student Awards in both classical and jazz piano. His early accomplishments include performances in Italy and Miami with the Miami International Piano Festival and featured on HBO Documentary “The Music in Me” and Jazziz Magazine.
He has appeared solo, with his trio or guest at Sweet Rhythm, Panama Jazz Festival,Carnegie Hall, 92Y, Princeton,Kennedy Center, Duke Ellington Jazz Festival, Tanglewood, Dizzy Club Coca Cola, White House. He has been guest of Paquito D’Rivera, Marian McPartland,Danilo Perez,Ira Sullivan,Bill Charlap.
He has toured with Antonio Hart, Bobby Watson, Lisa Henry as part of the Peer to Peer Thelonious Monk Institute Program. First Lady Michelle Obama requested for him to be featured guest in her photo shoot of Harper Bazaar’s Magazine article “America’s Got Talent ”.
Antonio has been a recipient of scholarships from the Brubeck Institute and Vail Jazz Program.
He was a member of the Grammy Jazz Ensemble and recently accompany Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding during Grammy week.In He was awarded the Ella Fitzgerald Award for outstanding soloist at the 2011 Essentially Ellington Competition.
Wynton Marsalis has chosen him as one of the upcoming “Who’s Got Next” new generation of upcoming jazz artists. His musical influences include,Oscar Peterson, Gene Harris, Thelonious Monk,Brad Mehladau, Bill Evans, Paquito D’Rivera, Chopin, Ernesto Lecuona and many more.
