Jazzonian is very pleased to announce its 2011 Excellence in Jazz Education Award. This year's recipient is Mr. Christopher Dorsey, Band Director of the Jazz Orchestra at Dillard Center for the Arts in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. As part of the honors, Jazzonian will also make a charitable contribution of $500 to the school Jazz program.
Mr. Dorsey has had a long distinguished career as a music educator. He is also an accomplished trombonist and has performed with jazz greats such as Nat Adderley, Al Grey, Slide Hampton, Lionel Hampton and the Roland Burnes Quintet.
This year, Mr. Dorsey's Dillard Center for the Arts' jazz ensemble has been selected to compete in the 16th annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival, considered the most prestigious competition for high school Jazz bands in the United States.
"It is a great honor to present this year's Excellence in Jazz Education Award to a man who has given so much to kids through Jazz education," said Bobby Ramirez, Founder and President, Jazzonian Museum. "It is wonderful to recognize Mr. Dorsey for his important work of helping kids realize their full potential through music, as well as an undisputed heavyweight champion going beyond the call of duty in helping to empower the next generation of Jazz musicians in South Florida."
