An important part of our mission is to empower, educate and inspire the next generation of Jazz musicians through the Jazzonian Young Jazz Leaders initiatives; as well as cultivate and nurture young fans of this artform.

The JAZZONIAN Young Jazz Leaders Honors Band features the most outstanding Jazz musicians in South Florida performing at the South Florida Jazz Summit.

About the South Florida Jazz Summit
A networking conference and expo that creates an environment in which an effective coalition of South Florida's Jazz businesses and organizations will gather with the goal of empowering Jazz in the area.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for a JAZZONIAN Young Jazz Leaders Scholarship, student must participate as part of the Young Jazz Leaders Honors Band.
Students from grades 8-12th and college level students that demonstrate a high level of proficiency in Jazz performance and improvisation are recommended by corresponding school band director and selected by audition.
Important Information:
Autition and rehearsal TBA. Participation is FREE for those Jazz music students selected by audition. All participating students will receive a South Florida Jazz Summit certificate of participation. Selected students are required to attend rehearsals as scheduled TBD prior to main performance.
Audition Information:
Participating instruments can be Trumpet, Saxophone, Trombone, Guitar, Vibraphones, Drums, Piano, Bass, Vocals, others. Each student must:
- demonstrate a high proficiency in Jazz improvisation with solid knowledge of Blues scales, as well as excellent sight reading skills.
- memorize the head melody of various standard tunes--some of which may include: Autumn Leaves, Satin Doll, Song For My Father, Groovin' High, Blue Bossa, Blues for Alice, and others.
- improvise two chorus solo in Bb Blues.
Drums, piano, guitar, and bass will be expected to comp and play grooves/bass lines over standard Swing, Bossa Nova, Jazz Waltz, Funk and Afro-Cuban grooves in 6/8.
Vocalists will perform two standard Jazz songs: Blues swing style and Jazz Ballad. Performers must demonstrate traditional Jazz style and authenticity as well as able to improvise by scatting.
