(12-30-2011) When it comes to Jazz history in South Florida, vocalist/pianist Mel Dancy and trumpet/flute/saxophonist Ira Sullivan pack a mean punch. "The first time I performed with Mel Dancy, he was 18 years old," said Ira Sullivan.
The Jazz Museum of Florida, Inc (JAZZONIAN) is very pleased to present two South Florida Jazz giants Mel Dancy and Ira Sullivan together again on Friday, January 6, 2012 performing at the Bienes Center for the Arts (St. Thomas Aquinas High School) located at 2801 SW 12th Street, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. More info at 305-298-2380.
The concert will also feature two extraordinarily talented young players, bassist Russell Hall (Dillard Center for the Arts High School) and Nicholas Newburg (North Broward Preparatory School) on drums.
This very special concert will be part of the grand opening of the Jazzonian Magical World of Jazz Art Multimedia Exhibition featuring original paintings by the late great artist Charles Mills and international renowned Jazz and Latin American singing sensation Maria Rivas, plus works by veteran fine arts photographer Russell Levin.
Opening reception will be on Friday, January 6th, 2012 at the Bienes Center for the Arts lobby. $10 p/p advanced tickets; $20 door admission on the day of the event. Students free. Doors open at 6 PM.
The exhibit will be hosted during the month of January at the Bienes Center for the Arts (St. Thomas Aquinas High School) located at 2801 SW 12th Street, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
All proceeds to benefit the Jazzonian Young Jazz Leaders Scholarship Fund plus cultural arts education outreach programs. Jazzonian is a non-profit 501c3 cultural arts organization.
The Bienes Center for the Arts at St. Thomas Aquinas is intended to nurture the emphasis on the arts for the students of St. Thomas Aquinas, other schools and institutions in the area and the community at-large. The Bienes Center offerings will excite the community about the important role of the "Arts" and will provide a venue for theatre, dance, music, lectures, art, drama, speech, and debate through the production of local, regional, national and international events and performances.
